Are All Exercises Created Equal?
Apr 22nd
In my recent “Are All Calories Created Equal” post, I discussed how important it was to understand the quality of various calories, their benefits, and how to use them in an intelligent eating regimen. As my piece made clear – no, not all calories are created equal.
Guess what? The same holds true when it comes to various forms of exercise. Each modality, or form, has a specific function and provides unique benefits to the human body. There is a lot of crossover, meaning that some forms have multiple benefits, while others are a bit more one-dimensional.

Ask Alfonso – What Sneakers Should I Wear?
Mar 25th
Hi Alfonso!
I have a question. I’m hoping that you as a trainer can recommend a really good pair of sneakers, and can suggest which ones are the best. I easily go through a pair every 4 months until they have no support.
I have tried almost every brand. Most of the time when I have to choose a pair, it’s hard to find which ones are the best for support and comfort. I teach dance class, and kickboxing so I need sneakers that support the entire foot, knees, hips, back, and even my neck! I have trouble finding ones that More >
More Cardio Confusion – Try H.I.T.T.
Feb 25th
Few modes of exercise create such misinformation as cardiovascular or aerobic activities.
In my first Cardio Confusion posting, I debunked the myth that weight training isn’t cardiovascular training, and that the best way to lose weight is to perform hours of boring, mundane aerobic activities.
But within that myth, lies yet another untruth – this time the one that tells people, looking to burn the maximum amount of fat, that they should exercise in the 60% – 70% of their maximum heart rate range. It’s even printed on a graph labeled “fat burning zone” or something similar on most pieces of cardiovascular equipment. ASK ALFONSO: CAN A TREADMILL HELP MY TRAINING?
Dec 28th
Hey Alfonso,
My parents bought myself and my wife a treadmill for Christmas this year – but I honestly don’t know what to do with it!
I know that sounds strange but I just don’t include any form of running in my workout regime. I’m a real weights guy and my wife does yoga and pilates. I also know from reading the site that you’re not a big fan of running.
I don’t want to insult my parents but I also don’t want to leave the treadmill hanging around the house and being used as a clothes hanger! So how would you suggest More >
ASK ALFONSO: SHOULD I TRY A TRIATHLON?
Dec 13th
Hey there Alfonso,
Here’s my question. A good friend of mine wants to compete in a Triathlon event next year and has asked me to join him so we can both encourage each other and get fit together.
I’m in my early 40’s and am in decent, but not terrific, shape. I like the idea of challenging myself but I’m honestly not sure if I have the time to really devote to this event. I work a demanding job with long hours and have a wife and two small kids. I’m also worried about just what is involved and the toll it More >
WHY MARATHONS MAY NOT MAKE YOU HEALTHY
Nov 8th
The annual New York City ING marathon was held yesterday and more than 43,000 runners showed up to complete the 26.2 mile race – including a certain Chilean miner!
For many people running a marathon is high up on their to do list – and one of the ultimate symbols of personal achievement. For some reason, marathon-ing has become a symbol of strength, determination, and triumph, far more so than other excessive exercise forms. But honestly, I’m not a fan – and think long distance running in general is just not healthy for your body.
The fact is the human body is not designed More >
CARDIO CONFUSION
Oct 6th
It really angers me when I see a supposedly authentic and qualified fitness website spreading misinformation. It’s one of the reasons we started the Angry Trainer Fitness website in the first place – to give you the facts about fitness – not the fiction!
And man is there a need for fitness education out there! Just check out World Fitness News, a fitness and health information website I stumbled upon today. I found this article on weight loss and my jaw dropped at what I read.
The site suggests if you’re trying to lose weight that you must do 4-5 hours minimum of cardio ONLY exercise More >
