Ask Alfonso: Should I Cycle My Calorie Intake?
May 25th
Hey Alfonso,
I’m a fitness enthusiast and I seem to have success with my workouts. But when it to comes to nutrition, I’m calorically challenged.
As far as keeping your metabolism up, what are your thoughts on the concept of calorie shifting; having a low calorie day followed by a high calorie day?
Also, I have heard that when a plateau is reached and weight loss halts, to not only change up the exercise routine, but to tweak your diet too. I’ve even heard it’s good to go completely off your diet for as long as a week to reset your metabolism. More >
Ask Alfonso: I’m Sore! Should I Workout?
May 4th
Hi Alfonso!
First of all, congratulations on your recent partnership with Discovery Fit & Health! Glad to see this website is spreading the word and busting fitness myths on a larger scale.
I’ve been following Body Rock TV for quite a while now, though I only started “bodyrocking” a few days ago. The way it works is that they put up a schedule and do HIIT for about 5 days a week. I’m sure someone already in good shape can jump into this routine, but I’m not sure if I should start out doing these workouts every day. Up till More >
Ask Alfonso: My Meds Made Me Gain Weight!
May 2nd
Hello Alfonso,
Last year I was put on a high dose of steroids, which caused me to gain 75lbs. I was just recently taken off the meds and want to begin working out so that I can find the real me that is hidden within.
I am confused about the direction I should take; some people say that I should just do cardio to burn fat, then do body weight exercises to gain muscle.
Others say that body weight exercises, like the ones on this site and BodyRockTV will do both.
I am fearful of building muscle beneath the fat and More >
Ask Alfonso: How Late Can I Eat?
Apr 20th
Hi Alfonso,
I really enjoy your site! Thanks for keeping it simple and straightforward. My question is this: how late should I eat?
I have heard that you should eat about 2-3 hours before you go to sleep. I have also heard that you should eat when you’re hungry. For me the two conflict sometimes. Any insight would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Naomi
Ask Alfonso: Can I Make My Own Sports Drink?
Mar 11th
Hi Alfonso!
I love your site, and I decided to ask you about something I am interested in. I recently got really into working out and eating healthy, but I know NOTHING about nutrition, that is why do my own research on websites like yours (good job here), and try to learn as much information as possible.
My question is about WATER. I drink plain water during my workout. I actually drink only water and tea (green, herbal, rooibos, unsweetened), no coffee (hate it), no sodas or juices (got rid of those), no alcohol (100% abstinent).
I recently read somewhere, that More >
Ask Alfonso: Night Time Nutrition
Feb 28th
Hello Alfonso.
Because of lifestyle, kids, work, etc. my weight training during the week is done late at night (around 9.30 or 10.00 PM). By that time I’ve had breakfast, lunch, dinner (around 500 cal each) and two snacks (around 100-200 cal each).
I understand the right meal/snack after weight training is critical to building muscle. What should I eat after weight training? Should I reduce the calories or one of my other meals/snacks? My overall goal is to become leaner and build some muscle.

Ask Alfonso: Creatine Question
Jan 10th
Hey Alfonso,
I keep reading about creatine in virtually every magazine I read – but I really have no idea what it is – and what it does.
My friend swears by it and claims it’s essential for anyone looking to develop serious muscle. Do you agree? Have you ever used it? And which brands do you recommend?
Thanks
Tom, Orlando
TASTE IT OR WASTE IT: EGGS
Nov 8th
HISTORY:
Eggs have been a staple of our diets ever since the birth of man! Historians theorize that caveman learned to boil them, Greeks used them as an ingredient for baking breads, Egyptians used them as symbolic gesture to bring about fertility, and we know that modern day society uses them for just about everything from breakfast food to holiday decorations.
But in recent years eggs have earned as bad rep due to their high fat and cholesterol content, leaving everyone confused as to whether they are actually healthy to eat. Athletes have long used eggs as a source of quality protein. More >
